The Timucan Indians first settled in Treasure
Island area in 300 AD. They built small towns and traded with other Indian
Nations. In 1958 Spaniard Panfilio de Nrvaez arrived looking for gold. In two
weeks he left leaving behind countless dead and tortured Timucans.

than became populated by Europeans who lived in beach shacks and made a living
by fishing and harvesting turtles. In 1848 The Great Gale blew through the area
and John's Pass appeared.
St. Petersburg experienced a land boom in
1900 that brought the week end tourist to the beaches. There was not any bridge
and the visitors had to rely on ferry service. The first Hotel was built in
1915 and called the Coney Island.

Treasure Island causeway was constructed and completed in 1939 and was called
the best constructed bridge in Florida. After World War II, Treasure Island
grew with many more hotels and homes being built. The fifties brought many new
waterfront neighborhoods into being.
