Ybor City The National Historic Landmark District, one of three in the state of Florida, features a collection of former cigar factories and other unique buildings which now house eclectic shops, restaurants and a micro-brewery. The state museum offers a look into the area's ethnic past with a glimpse into how the typical cigar worker lived, and it hosts a walking tour of the district. St. Petersburg - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Florida Marine Research Institute conducted its first manatee survey for 1999 on January 6. Researchers from 13 agencies, research labs and universities counted 1,873 manatees across the state. "This was a great team effort by the manatee research community. Typical of the year's first major cold front, manatees were still migrating to their wintering sites. Often, the first count of the winter is not the highest for this reason," said Dr. Bruce Ackerman, DEP marine mammal biologist and coordinator of the statewide surveys. "Due to the long warm spell preceding this cold front, manatees remained dispersed throughout the state well into December. These statewide counts are quite variable depending on the specific combination of weather factors and the behavioral patterns of manatees in each part of the state." Click here for more!
