St. Petersburg
- The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection's Florida Marine Research Institute conducted its
first manatee survey for 1999 on January 6. Researchers from 13 agencies,
research labs and universities counted 1,873 manatees across the state. "This
was a great team effort by the manatee research community. Typical of the year's
first major cold front, manatees were still migrating to their wintering sites.
Often, the first count of the winter is not the highest for this reason,"
said Dr. Bruce Ackerman, DEP marine mammal biologist and coordinator of the
statewide surveys. "Due to the long warm spell preceding this cold front,
manatees remained dispersed throughout the state well into December. These
statewide counts are quite variable depending on the specific combination of
weather factors and the behavioral patterns of manatees in each part of the
state."

The Florida
Holocaust Museum - "The
Museum is dedicated to advancing public awareness, education and understanding
of the Holocaust, honoring the millions of innocent people who suffered,
struggled, and died in the Shoah"
Within the walls of the Florida Holocaust Museum are the hopes
and dreams, the security and strength, the mainstay and the future of the many
who died in the ghettos and concentration camps of Europe, the survivors, the
few who tried to save them, and those who liberated them. The Holocaust was the
state sponsored persecution and systemic attempt to annihilate European Jewry by
the Nazis and their collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Six million Jews and
five million children, gypsies, mentally and physical disabled, homosexuals,
Jehovah's Witnesses, political dissidents, and Resistance Movement members were
murdered under Nazi tyranny. Intolerance among people is not unique. It can
manifest in a myriad of ways including religious hatred or racial
discrimination.
