Getting the lowest Airfare Getting the lowest available airfare can be easy. "Most importantly, be flexible, plan ahead and always use a travel agent." This advice is offered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in its department fact sheet, "Getting the Best Airfare," which is part of a series called "Plane Talk." One of the three most important tactics for finding the best airfare is flexibility. Being flexible, according to the DOT, means considering several departure and return dates, and being willing to fly into alternative airports that are near your destination. For example, in the Tampa Bay area, most travelers fly into Tampa International Airport. Within one hour of the Tampa International Airport are two other major airports - Sarasota and St. Petersburg-Clearwater. Orlando International is just 90 minutes away, and Fort Myers Airport is just over two hours away.
